In his forty years of practice, Dr. O. A. Mercado’s influence in the field of podiatric medicine has been considerable, having lectured extensively both nationally and internationally. Many of the techniques that he developed for foot and ankle surgery are standards in the profession, such as his techniques for bunions, heel spurs and ankle stabilization.
He was Professor of Surgery at the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine where he taught hundreds of students. For over twenty-five years he headed a Podiatric Surgical Residency program training young men and women in the art of podiatric surgery.
Dr. Mercado has written six books and is the best selling author in his field of expertise.
An Atlas of Podiatric Anatomy and An Atlas of Foot Surgery, Vols. I & II are considered classics. The Journal of Canadian Podiatric Medicine wrote “students without this text are depriving themselves of a proper surgical education. Indeed, many podiatrists consider this textbook as their bible for surgery.”
He is also the host of the nationally distributed surgical video series entitled, The Art of Surgery. The entire series as well as his major writings have been translated into Spanish for international distribution.
Dr. Mercado has been honored by his peers fro his great achievements in the profession by being inducted into the Podiatric Hall of Fame for his lifetime contributions to podiatric surgery. In 2001, he was selected by the Management Journal as one of America’s Most Influential Foot and Ankle Surgeons.
Dr. Mercado loves to travel, something he gets to do frequently with his active lecture schedule.
Dr. Kent Mercado
There are very few individuals in the health care field that hold a dual degree in medicine and law. Dr. O. Kent Mercado is much sought after to serve on hospital and health care committees. He presently sits on numerous hospitals and managed care boards and past liaison between the Illinois Bar Association and the legislation committee in Springlfield, Illinois. He is the Medical Director of the Zacatacas Medical Mission in Mexico and has recently returned from a Medical Mission in Haiti to perform surgery with a team of nine doctors. He has been instumentalal in procurring medical and surgical supplies for medical missions in Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and with the help of his neighbors, was able to send over $1,000,000 worth of supplies to earthquake ravaged Haiti. He also helped facilitate the largest private donation of medical supplies to the flood relief efforts in Pakistan.
Mercado Food and Ankle Clinic was founded in 1964 by Dr. O. A. Mercado, Professor Emeritus and internationally renowned author and lecturer, soon after the conclusion of his service as an army doctor at Kimbrough Army Hospital, Fort Meade, Maryland. Through hard work, innovative management, and successful growth, the group has become one of the leading foot and ankle centers in Illinois. The Mercado Center for Foot & Ankle Surgery in Oak Park was one of the country’s first office-based podiatric surgical facilities to be accredited by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Organizations. The practice expanded to now five locations: Oak Park, Carol Stream, Berwyn and Naperville.
Dr. Kent Mercado joined his father in practice in July of 1990. He graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, where he was awarded the Ohio Podiatric Medical Association’s Community Service Award and the college’s coveted Surgical Proficiency Award. He served his residency in foot and ankle surgery at Saint Mary of Nazareth Medical Center in Chicago. He has received intensive training at Presbyterian Hospital Center, a Stanford University affiliate in San Francisco and Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago, as well as specialty training in hyperbaric oxygen therapy for diabetic wound care. He also holds a degree in law from John Marshall Law School.
Dr. Mercado has lectured widely on foot and ankle surgery, most recently at the University of Barcelona in Spain, and has contributed chapters for several podiatric medical textbooks and most recently to a Medical Law text. In addition, he is a member of the surgical team of the popular Art of Surgery video series. He is the co-founder of the Physicians Focus Group.
Dr. Mercado enjoys physical fitness. He is an expert swimmer and bicyclist who has participated in many triathalon races and has run up the John Hancock Building (87 stories high) in 15 minutes, one of the best times for his age group. He is also a gourmet cook who enjoys having cookouts with this wife and three children. Dr. Mercado has been a Naperville resident for more than thirteen years.
